Your go to FAQ page for metaverse definitions! This page is for you if you’ve ever struggled to keep up with the technical jargon surrounding the metaverse or just need to clarify what the metaverse is. See below for a full list of metaverse FAQ questions and don't forget to check out our Metaverse Directory to see who's building what and get involved in the metaverse.

What is the metaverse?

The metaverse is a collective virtual shared space created by the convergence of virtually enhanced physical reality and physically persistent virtual space. It includes all virtual worlds, augmented reality, virtual reality, and the internet. Currently there are many smaller metaverses or ‘virtual worlds’ which exist but are disconnected from each other and have their own user bases.

What can I do in the metaverse?

You can create, buy, sell, explore, and interact with other users. The items that you can create or buy can include buildings, cars, games, art & music but there is no limit to what you can create, you can create anything that you can imagine. By doing these things in the metaverse you are contributing to the creator economy.

How can I join the metaverse?

You can begin your journey by viewing our metaverse directory and looking under the virtual worlds section. There are currently a few main metaverses which you can join and interact with.

What is an avatar in the metaverse?

An avatar is a representation of a user in the metaverse. It is a virtual body that a user can control and use to interact with other users and objects in the metaverse. If you joined a metaverse, one of the first steps would usually be to create an avatar to use in the virtual world. You can think of this the same way as creating a player in a game.

What is virtual reality?

Virtual reality is a computer-generated simulation of a three-dimensional image or environment that can be interacted with in a seemingly real or physical way by using special electronic equipment such as a helmet with a screen inside, or gloves fitted with sensors.

What is augmented reality?

Augmented reality is a live view of a physical, real-world environment whose elements are augmented by computer-generated sensory input such as sound, video, graphics or GPS data. Snapchat filters and similar filters applied over video/photos fall into this category.

What is mixed reality?

Mixed reality is a term that encompasses a variety of technologies that allow virtual objects to be placed in the real world. This term is generally used to define AR objects which have awareness of real world objects which is usually accomplished using predefined code or more recently ai to detect real world objects in 3D via a camera.

What is a virtual world?

A virtual world is a 3D environment that can be accessed and interacted with by many users. All metaverses can be classed as virtual worlds as well as multiplayer online games.

What is a mirrorworld?

Mirrorworld is a virtual world that is a copy of the real world, currently these Mirrorworlds are mainly geographic copies of Earth but there are also several virtual spaces which contain anatomically correct working copies of factories. These virtual factories allow industrial companies to test new manufacturing flows at reduced cost to testing in the physical world.

What is the physical world?

The physical world is the world of matter and is composed of everything around us that we can touch.

Can you touch objects in the metaverse?

Contrary to the physical world, it is not currently possible to touch objects in any of the existing metaverses. We predict that technology will advance enough in the future to be able to send signals to our brain which simulate real touch in our nervous systems.

Where can I find out more about existing metaverses?

You can read our metaverse directory for information and links to existing metaverses and to find out more about who is building what.
